Coming to Urban Spaces Around New York City
Friday, September 10th, 2021 – 9 PM
While thousands of people around the U.S. still wait for Congress to pass the American Dream and Promise Act, this September, a group of artists will send a message of love and support to the country’s diverse population of dreamers.
On the night of September 10th, DREAMERS, a video installation with works by over 40 international artists will light up the city of New York. At 9PM, the show will be simultaneously projected onto dozens of buildings and outdoor spaces around the city, inviting a moment of communal gathering and sharing. Dreamers will also be on view continuously at the Clio Art Fair from Friday, September 10th–Sunday, September 12th.
Despite these challenging times, New York is alive and remains a center of cultural diversity and creativity. DREAMERS calls artists and all New Yorkers to demonstrate their sense of community and to celebrate diversity, paying tribute to the richness of the city’s melting pot. “By bringing art outside of galleries and into the city,” says artist and curator, Laura Mega, “the video projections reframe the shared experience of art in public places, activating and connecting people and art.”
DREAMERS was conceived during the pandemic as a way to honor and celebrate the communities of immigrants that the recent health crisis has disproportionately impacted.
Borrowing its name from the undocumented youth that has been fighting for a path to citizenship, the project hopes to honor the dreams of everyone who has left their homeland in pursuit of new possibilities of life elsewhere.
The show was created and curated by visual artist Laura Mega, co-founder of the international art project LAZZARO_art doesn’t sleep (@lazzaro_artdoesntsleep), in collaboration with New York-based art writer and cultural producer Maurita Cardone, and produced by Chiara Mannarino.
Highlights
Selected artists include Nicky Nodjoumi, a Brooklyn-based Iranian-born fine art painter who researches legacies of personal and collective trauma; Regina José Galindo, a performance artist from Guatemala whose work explores human rights, violence against women and immigration; Ron Haviv, a photojournalist who covers conflicts around the world; Ganzeer, a visual artist who has gained international fame during the Egyptian revolution; Millo, an Italian street artist whose work appears in cities all over the world.
The group also includes artists whose work originates from their personal experiences of discrimination and injustice. Billie Allen is a Black man who was sentenced to the death penalty for a crime he did not commit and who has found solace in painting; Hong Chun Zhang is an Asian-American artist who explores the immigrant experience through the stories of different generations; Nunnapat Ratanavanh’s work engages with his experience of growing up as transgender; The Locker Room is a Brooklyn-based collective that creates community around grassroots arts.
