ABOUT NORTHERN YOUTH PROJECT (NYP)

Founded in the summer of 2009 by a group of local youth and community members in response to the staggering statistics of high school dropout rates, teen substance abuse, academic underachievement, depression, diabetes, and lack of teen services in rural northern New Mexico, NYP is a model program, known for the excellence of its programming.

NYP’s Heritage Garden serves as a locus for art, agricultural, entrepreneurial and community service projects that honor the past and prepare for the future. Some Serious Business provides strategic planning and marketing support, as well as funds for special art projects that enrich the teens’ connection with each other and the community. In 2014, NYP was one of a handful of organizations throughout the state to be honored by the New Mexico Community Foundation with a Chispa Award (meaning “spark”)—given annually to nonprofits that shine a light in their communities and accomplish “a lot with a little.”
