Some Serious Business is pleased to host multidisciplinary artist, writer, mother, professor, and curator Christen Clifford as part of SSB AWAY’s artist-in-residence program in Abiquiu, New Mexico.

Her installation INTERIORS: We Are All Pink Inside—part of the show Curriculum at Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts—was called “provocative, humorous, and potent” by Hyperallergic, and was an Artforum Critics’ Pick and artnet Editors’ Pick. Ideas for this installation were workshopped at Some Serious Business’ Comrade Truebridge project in 2015 in New York. The work was originally presented at Project for Empty Space, where the artist was a 2018 Feminist in Residence.

Clifford was also a 2018 IFP Screen Forward Fellow for her WIP autobiographical documentary, and a 2019 ACE Hotel AIR. With No Wave Performance Task Force, she was the lead artist on #wewishanamendietawasstillalive.

Her writing has been published in The Guardian, Broadly, and Brooklyn Rail.

Dazed wrote about her project 1WantYour3lood: “Christen Clifford leads a new generation of feminist performance artists steeped in the politics of menstruation.” She co-curates Experiments & Disorders at Dixon Place, and co-chaired The Feminist Art Project’s Day of Panels Rape, Representation and Radicality for CAA and the Sexual Justice: Rape and Representation, Hate and Healing symposium at The New School, where she teaches.

Clifford lives in Queens and online @cd_clifford. More info at christenclifford.info

About SSB AWAY

SSB AWAY provides crucial time and space for artists to germinate ideas that might otherwise be marginalized during the intensity of public life and artistic production. An international network of residencies and retreats offer artists the agency to step away from career demands and public scrutiny, to rest and inhabit a nourishing space of creative sanctuary, solitude, access to nature, and multivalent privacy. The incubation process enables artists to play and experiment with emerging, unfamiliar, messy, or mysterious aspects of their practices. SSB AWAY currently offers retreats in New Mexico and Tuscany, Italy.
