SSB Presents FeMaLe GEniUs in Albuquerque and Santa Fe

Some Serious Business is pleased to present FeMaLe GEniUs from New York City, a collaborative ensemble of women multi-instrumentalists Nikki D’Agostino, Julie Hair, and Marnie Jaffe. Julie Hair and Marnie Jaffe blasted out of the Lower East Side art-rock scene of the 1980s and have come out on the other side. Julie’s background in the band 3 Teens Kill 4, and others, and Marnie’s Live Skull footprint inform their musicality. They founded FeMaLe GEniUs in 2017. Nikki D’Agostino is an avant-garde composer who teaches music technology at CUNY City Tech. She has gone from being a fan to a member. The addition of her free improv, skronk, and lyrical sax lines adds gravitas to the electric, effected instrumentation.

With their raw intensity, they have found the sonic equivalent of “Outsider Art.” Their unique arrangements and minimal, vocal-driven music use bass loops layered with combinations of harmonies, guitar, keys and sax. The lyrics speak to personal politics and authentic experiences. Musical virtuosity is not the end game. They are in the process of making their first record. About Lisa Kori
Lisa Kori is a Hawaiian-born, New Mexico-based musician, artist and filmmaker. While working on The Medium and the Mayhem, a research project documenting handmade electronic music in countries such as Brazil, Indonesia, India and Chile, she began to perform her own noise music, touring with friends and collaborators. Her current work adds a lyrical touch, bringing in influences from American and Hawaiian folk music. She has performed as a solo artist as well as with ensembles in Brazil, Switzerland, NYC and Santa Fe. In addition to performing, she is currently co-authoring a chapter about community formation in the context of handmade electronic music for a forthcoming book. She’ll be playing soon-to-be-released work! I have one single out, it’s called Don’t Come Running: https://open.spotify.com/album/46KH5fR0ZO4oFpSB59gQX3
